Why IV Nutrient Therapy is Useful to My Health

The pressing question from others since beginning this journey into starting an intravenous (IV) vitamin therapy business has been a simple one, “why?” Well, it isn’t actually all that straightforward. There are many factors as to why this therapy is efficacious, and creating this blog is going to be a platform to which we can stand on and declare abundantly the evidence behind nutritional wellness. For now, let’s start from the beginning in explaining the birth of IV nutrient therapy and what was found.

My Oh, Myers

In the 1950s, Dr. John Myers was a practicing physician in Baltimore. It was during that time he pioneered the use of IV nutrient therapy. Dr. Myers performed weekly to monthly nutrient infusions on some of his patients in an attempt to treat a multitude of ailments, such as fatigue and depression, for 25+ years. In 1984 after Dr. Myers’ unfortunate passing, Dr. Alan Gaby, MD took over his patient’s. He was quick to recognize the honest desire the patients had to continue this therapy. After some minor modifications to the original “cocktail,” he continued on with the practice and began documenting on the experience, and thank goodness for that!

For over 11 years, Dr. Gaby administered 15,000 injections to 800-1,000 patients treating acute conditions such as asthma attacks, muscle spasms, migraines, and upper respiratory infections. He too would help manage chronic conditions such as fatigue, pain, allergies, and more. The all-loving mixture contained magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. Well, while all of this is interesting, where is the proof?

Making Himself an Honest Man

Dr. Gaby, following his quick acknowledgment of the therapy’s benefits, fortunately began to document on these experiences. In 2002, he published an article in Alternative Medicine Review elaborating on the clinical research surrounding this advantageous therapy.

The core of giving nutrients through and IV, rather than taking something orally, is that it allows us to saturate cells immediately with what they need. This is where bioavailability, or the amount we absorb, comes into play. Our digestive systems are complex and are extremely variable from person to person. This system is affected by a multitude of factors, a story for a different time, that can affect how readily we absorb nutrients. You take a multivitamin? That’s great, and you should continue to, but you may only be absorbing 30-40% of it. “For example, IV-administered vitamin C at 50 g/day can result in blood serum levels of 80 mg/dL, compared to 9.3 mg/dL when administered orally.” Moreover, “oral supplementation with magnesium results in little or no change in serum magnesium concentrations, whereas IV administration can double or triple the serum levels” (Gaby 2002).

In his article, Gaby continues to elaborate on many anecdotal reports with good outcomes related to asthma, migraines, fatigue, depression, pain management, athletic performance, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular ailments. These therapies were found to be safe, effective, and overall improved the health of his patients.

Jumping on the Bandwagon

After sharing these clinical results for many years through conferences and to several thousand physicians, it was only a matter of time that other practitioners began to provide this remarkable service as well. This regained focus has led to other promising studies being performed. Dr. Patrick Massey, MD performed a study to evaluate how effective the modified Myers' formula was on the symptoms of fibromyalgia. “At the end of the study, all participants reported increased energy' and activities of daily living as well as a 60% reduction in pain and an 80% decrease in fatigue” (Massey 2007). While more research is needed, these promising results continue to shed great light on this practice.
